Youth political engagement is often reported to be at a low level, raising concerns about the future of democratic processes. However, the patterns and drivers of this engagement within the Malaysian higher education context remain underexplored. This quantitative study aims to assess the level and identify the key factors influencing political engagement among students at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. A total of 367 students from six study programs in the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Development were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal a high level of political engagement among respondents, influenced by factors such as interest in politics, family influence, and exposure through social media. Family influence emerged as the most dominant factor. The study concludes that youth political engagement is shaped by the interaction of internal and external factors. The implications suggest the need for concerted efforts by universities and policymakers to strengthen civic education, strategically leverage social media, and encourage intergenerational political dialogue to cultivate a culture of democratic involvement among youth.
