Isu mengenai krisis makanan di sesebuah negara bukanlah sesuatu yang asing, bahkan beberapa negara seperti Afrika Timur, Venezuela, Yaman dan Bangladesh pernah berhadapan dengan masalah tersebut. Implikasi negatif yang terhasil daripada krisis makanan juga amat dahsyat sehingga berpotensi menyebabkan kematian dalam jumlah yang ramai. Oleh itu, setiap negara haruslah peka untuk meningkatkan keterjaminan makanan dalam wilayah masing-masing. Salah satu strategi yang boleh diimplementasikan bagi meningkatkan keterjaminan makanan di sesebuah wilayah adalah melalui pemerkasaan sektor pertanian. Bertitik tolak daripada itu, kajian ini bertujuan untuk meninjau peranan petani penyewa tanah di Tuaran dalam meningkatkan keterjaminan makanan melalui penglibatan golongan tersebut dalam sektor pertanian berskala kecil. Data primer dalam kajian ini diperolehi menggunakan kaedah temubual dan pemerhatian di lapangan. Penolong Pegawai Pertanian Tuaran dan sembilan orang petani penyewa tanah merupakan informan yang ditemubual dalam kajian ini. Hasil kajian ini mendapati bahawa golongan petani penyewa tanah di Tuaran memainkan peranan penting sebagai pengeluar utama hasil pertanian berasaskan makanan seperti jagung dan sayuran. Melalui penglibatan golongan ini secara tidak langsung juga menjadikan Tuaran sebagai daerah pengeluar jagung manis utama di Sabah. Hasil kajian ini diharap dapat dijadikan maklumat sokongan kepada pihak yang memerlukan khususnya pemegang taruh bagi memperkasakan lagi sektor pertanian berskala kecil di Tuaran, Sabah.
The issue of food crises in a country is not uncommon, as several countries, including those in East Africa, Venezuela, Yemen, and Bangladesh, have experienced such challenges. The negative implications arising from food crises can be severe and may potentially result in significant loss of life. Therefore, countries must remain vigilant and strive to enhance food security within their respective regions. One strategy that can be implemented to strengthen food security is through the empowerment of the agricultural sector. Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine the role of tenant farmers in Tuaran in enhancing food security through their involvement in small-scale agricultural activities. Primary data were obtained through interviews and field observations. The Assistant Agriculture Officer of Tuaran and nine tenant farmers were interviewed as informants in this study. The findings indicate that tenant farmers in Tuaran play an important role as major producers of food-based agricultural products, particularly maize and vegetables. Their involvement has also indirectly contributed to establishing Tuaran as a major producer of sweet corn in Sabah. The findings of this study are expected to serve as supporting information for relevant stakeholders, particularly those involved in strengthening the small-scale agricultural sector in Tuaran, Sabah.
